men of the County has told me that if I want a library I shall have one. I have made up my mind to accept of his offer & have made out a list of books I shall tomorrow send by him to Albany or New York for them - I do not intend to own them myself for as he will purchase them & be accountable for their payment it is but right that they shall be safe from any execution against me, for I choose to read them myself rather than have the (illegible) Sheriff peruse them - during the last year I have done some business under all discouraging circumstances done better than I had reason to expect, if I obtain a library I shall do business in the Supreme Court & in Chancery if possible & I entertain strong hopes of being able to succeed - but nothing shall discourage me for I can make a living anywhere - a short time since I had an offer to go to Cincinnati in Ohio, have my expenses paid and an employment which would have made me a good living as the editor of a paper - but it is a business I do not like & have made up my mind to stay here "the turning of another tide" I have been here so long & know the people so well as to be somewhat prejudiced in their favor so much so as to like the friends I have made here better than the friends that come here from the East, they are not quite so cold blooded & I have however nothing to say against Harris & Stevens, they are getting rich - I should like to know what you think of doing with Rufus, I am inclined to believe that he would succeed better as a merchant than in a profession, he is now of that age when he should make a choice
