Fort Madison Nov 22 1846 Dear Brother I fear that you must by this time have come to the conclusion that I have altogether forgotten you or have been guilty of almost criminal negligence in not writing, but neither is the case, I rec'd your letter containing a satisfaction piece of the mortgage held by you against me of lot No 149 in Fort Madison, which letter I answered the next day - I have also rec'd a letter of yours of March 16th from which I inferred that you had received no answer from me, this I also answered the same day I rec'd it. I (illegible) it from the circumstance of receiving it after returning home from a little journey I had made. Another letter of yours dated July 9 I rec'd yesterday, from that I find that two letters I have written have never reached you. (Now?) last letter of July 9th went to Madison Wisconsin Terr. and also another letter from Penn Yan, the Post Master of Madison Wis Terr. wrote to me informing me of the Penn Yan letter & stated that he could not send it without a written authority from me - and I wrote to him accordingly & I received it together with yours yesterday, he is an old acquaintaince of mine & in his letter informs me that both letters had been long in his office but would have been sent sooner had he not been sick for the last three months - I cannot account for your not receiving my letters. We have now a new Post Master, and upon my mentioning the circumstance to him he says that there have been many similar complaints, that letters sent by what is called the Southern route have often miscarried but
