has troubled me very much & I have come to a conclusion which will surprise you much & which I am afraid will not meet with your approval - You ask have the people in my country got the California gold fever? I answer - Not as many as I would naturally expect - but I have got the California fever and whether it will turn to be a California gold fever is to be determined some time hencee - I have deliberately & thoughtfully made up my mind to leave here the last of February and find my way to San Francisco in California. Elizabeth goes with me of course and is very willing to go - A sea voyage is her only chance for life & health. I wish to take a steamboat from New York to [Chagren?] at the Isthmus from there overland to Panama, from there to San Francisco - The danger attending the journey does not trouble me in the least - for I never was afraid of anything - The way & means is the only difficulty - I am in debt here & every debt I will honestly pay, I will not do as when I left New York leave some behind to follow me with cost upon cost - I have had an offer for some of my land which I shall close with in the course of a few days I think with the avails of the land & some other matters I can pay every thing - I wish to reserve 90 acres which includes what is in your name so that I can have something to come back for - forty acres of this ninety is worth at least $15 per acre & if I should live here would hate to take $25 per acre for it. It adjoins the town & will
