Ft Madison Sept 14, 1857 Wm Enos Esq. Yours of Aug 25th is at hand and it would have been answered before but I was absent in Wisconsin when it letter came - & while I was gone a letter also came from Elizabeth dated June 17th which is the first news we have had of our California friends for several months - not since I wrote to your brother Edw. Elizabeth writes that they began to be afraid the mining operation was not going to prove profitable so concluded to go to the mines & see for themselves - Elizabeth accompanied Mr. Eno to the place where the company were at work - 220 miles over a rough desert - country East of Los Angeles - they returned to Los Angeles on the 7th June - discouraged & I take it from the tone of the letter that the company will not go on with the work & will lose all they have invested. They were undecided what to do.
