34. I have of myself. It has ever been an inspiration! The germ of the idea apparently came into being with the lean, lanky infant on that April day, for as far as I know there has never been a beginning or an end to this desire that has permeated my whole being and coloured my whole existence. The family knew no artists. Certainly I had no contact with artists during and even after the formative period. Moreover, there were none where I was born, where we lived and were reared. With so definite an inspiration and objective even from babyhood on, during these first years of childhood, there followed with me an unheard of program of economy. For the single purpose with which to buy crayons, paints and drawing-books that looked alluring in catalogues - these things rather than the candy and toys most children desire and indulge small investments in - pennies were carefully accumulated and hoarded. And oh! how slowly, how painfully the small sums grew. But when there was enough with which to purchase and possess a self-instructing drawing-book my joy was
