The dresses that had been out-grown by two elder sisters and handed down to me in good condition were passed on no more. Neither do I recall any [illegible] very own ever having been handed down to a sister younger than I. The life of a frock was exhausted before it had time to be outgrown by me. The destructive movement of the tomboy that was I, on the path of youth - [illegible] high spirits, necessitated patches and patching to follow ever in my wake. The shy, wild young creature soon, however, was tamed - that is; outwardly at least. Being a member of a large family turns early responsibilities onto everyone. Small feet learned quickly to run light errands; small hands grasped little tasks; willing minds were receptive to training. Early duties that came my way were often times too heavy and way beyond my years. I learned readily and even then was conscientious and
