Clearly, it was necessary to select from that which presented itself before me, and struggle through to a deeper understanding. This naturally required some time. A period of adjustment followed then, which carried well over an interval of years. In this intervening time it was largely a matter of experimenting, rejecting and accepting; another attempt, some inclusions, more discarding; further trials in this and that, some embracing of possibilities, and dismissing other materials and relationships. And thus it went. This same method undoubtedly continues throughout a lifetime of painting and searching. Even though I think I am more stabilized, and know decidedly better what I want now than I did then, the seeking of facts and relationships of nature continues. Even so our desires fortunately change year by year - and; I hope - we continue to struggle towards clearer thinking, new aspirations and fresh ideals. Sometimes in needs must falter. Then we again go forward with vigorous enthusiasm. It is very possible that an adjustment from the classroom to painting on one's own is necessary and unavoidable in any case. There was a greater
