My husband was also to send a monthly report to the head of trustees and write a more inclusive disquisition to be printed upon his return to the United States. The primary purpose of the fellowship was to familiarize individuals with foreign customs and peoples so as to create sympathies and a broader understanding; and strengthen and tighten international bonds. Therefore my going along was encouraged. Since, - it was reasoned, - it was a splendid thing to have one person a bit more enlightened of other peoples, and more understanding of the problems of these countries; two individuals having the same opportunities would be still more effective. Our going was the cause of great elation. For this certainly was our big opportunity and we could not fail to be completely excited by the miracle that had come about. Who wouldn't be delirious with joy at such magic? My stomach, however, was misbehaving. It was bothering me more and more frequently. Moreover it could not be denied. It had already been more than a year since the appendectomy which was to solve my difficulties, and months since the tonsillectomy. Apparently the condition had not improved. Years before I had even given up trying to eat lettuce and raw foods because of the inevitable distress they never failed to invoke. Now oranges too, seemed to be creating a disturbance.
