I am convinced the Macholyl was no experiment. The physicians - I am certain - were expert and knew what they were about. It was only the unexpected, the unpredictable that had once again turned up in me. No one could have counted on such an overwhelming reaction. How could he? If it had been forseen I might have been spared -in fact I am sure I should have been. But it was by means of tests such as these - tests that were devised for others than me- that medical-men learned to know the organism they were dealing with. It was tests such as these moreover - I think- which proved the degree and seriousness of nervous fatigue which I am combatting. Normal man ordinarily does not react in this manner. What is Mecholyl? - you may well ask, as do I. Hypothetically - as I understand it- Mecholyl is a powerful stimulant. it was supposedly used- I think - to measure the general glandular activity of the body as related to the gastro-intestinal activity. As an artificial stimulant to glandular activity, it at least provoked part of the glands to play well overtime; part were inactive and responded not at all - but perhaps that is the nature of the drug. The hydrocloric acid secretion - which was measured in the test tubes was not perceptibly influenced or modified thereby. I very much think the inferences drawn from this test were not the expected ones. The undue acid secretion- I think- it must have been deduced is not being provoked
