Dec 13 1943 Evening, dearest. Two pauses I had today. Both brief: both devoted to what I would do most...declare my love to you. I don't know what "closed" might mean at Patterson. Probably to outsiders. We have a waiting list for the hospital here! But I'm fine; rarely ever do I get sick (touch wood). This field is lousy. It's out on the salt flats, backed up against a stark up-rearing range of rock mountains. It's 60 miles to the nearest available town...Wells, Nevada. 120 miles to Salt Lake City. I probably sounded "gripped" (use a more colorful, but not as nice a word for that attitude in the
