The ground was covered with snow, and the heat from the body and moisture of the snow soon caused their moccasons to soften and stretch so as to be useless, hence they were discarded the first day, and their feet wrapped with such clothing as could be spared. In addition; to cross some of the rivers, viz. Clinch, Powells, Cumberland and Kentucky, it was necessary to wade the water, in some instances nearly waist deep.
