34 Battlefield, Wilderness, Va. Saturday, May 7th 1864 Threw up entrenchments and held our position. The duty of feeding the regiment while under fire is not a very pleasant task: During last night when making my way to the front, with the cooks, and provisions, I missed the location of the regiment and was almost captured by the rebels: fifteen or twenty steps more would have placed me in their hands. There was a gap between our regiment and the troops on their right, through which I walked and had already passed the videt line when I heard some one say in wisper: " Halt! where are you going - dont you see that rebel there".
