46 Tuesday, May 17th 1864. The movement to the left still continues. Earth works are thrown up at night and then left to be occupied by other troops. Wednesday 18th Heavy firing began this afternoon about four oclock - Serg't Henry Hill of Company "C" was wounded Thursday 19th Our Corps (the 9th) moved about two miles, and then threw up Rifle Pits, in the shape of a horse shoe. Isued three days cooked rations. The Cooks serve hot coffee night and morning. Firday 20th Several men, of the 8th Michigan, were brought in from the skirmish line wounded.
