47 Saturday May 21. 1864 The march "On to Richmond was continued to day, however the Johnnies only allowed us to make about two miles. They made a charge on the 6th Corps but were repulsed three times. It is dig and fight constantly - Our Colonel very drunk. Sunday 22 The march was kept up all last night, and until 5.15 oclock this morning, when we took breakfast. At 8 oclock a gill of whiskey was issued to each man, and the line of battle formed. The Brigade Commissary had cattle killed but before the meat was ready to issue the regiment was ordered out on picket duty.
