79 Front of Petersburg, Va Saturday July 16th 1864 Lieutenant John S Eckel, regimental quarter master, came up and secured estimates of clothing for the men for August. I am much better today than for the past eight or ten days. Heavy skirmishing, with both artillery and musketry, on our right. Sunday 17th An order was promulgated to day; to the effect that all officers promoted after the first muster of the regiment must serve three years from date - Weather very fine. Monday 18th Last night an attact was expected, hence the 2d Corps threw up Rifle pits immediately in our rear, and every man was notified to be ready. The 24th N.Y. Cavalry, dismounted, was again placed in the front line immediately on our right.
