98 Near the Yellow Tavern, Va. Friday August 19" 1864 We were relieved from the front, at Petersburgburg, this morning about three oclock, by negro troops,of the 18th Corps. After marching about six or eight miles to the left we halted near the Yellow Tavern, or Weldon Railroad. Here we stacked arms and recieved a ration of salt mackrel. It had been raining quite rapidly all day, and the boys suggested putting their mackrel to soak in the pools of water, just about this time we heard the old familiar yell, which told us that the rebels were in our immediate front. The drum beat and the cry of "fall in" ran along the line, hence our mackerel were left. We had been laying in a wood
