101 Near the Yellow Tavern, Weldon R.R., Va. Saturday Augt 20th 1864 A more disagreeable night than last night could hardly be immagined: it rained stormed and the thunder and lightning were terrible. The enemy being only a short distance away, orders were given the vedettes to fire on anything that might appear in their front. Sometime during the night Paterick McManus, of Company "F" saw a man, during a flash of lightning, and immediately fired. The next flash revealed the fact that he had hit his man. After investigation it was discovered that Daniel Winger, of Company "F", who in some way, had gotten beyond the line of vedettes and was badly wounded by McManus. It was at first supposed Winger was dead and the fact that he was not was only discovered when he sat up and asked for some coffee.
