161 Fort McGilvery, Va. Monday, Dec. 26th 1864 A circular was read this morning, announcing the Capture of Savannah, Georgia, with 150 Cannon, an immense quantity of amunition and several hundred thousand bales of Cotton. An order has just been received directing that the men sleep with their accoutrements on tonight, and that at a signal it is expected a number of rebels propose coming into our lines to surrender. It may be a ruse but we are not to be caught napping. John S. Eckel brought me a sword, but no belt. I wrote to father to acertain cost of a sword belt. Weather cold and disagreeable, with rain.
