194 Fort McGilvery,Va. Monday, March 6th 1865 Was detailed, by Major S.K. Schwenk, to act as Adjutant of the Regiment. After receiving the order I reported to him and asked that the position might be given to one of the older 1st Lieutenants, as I know practically nothing about the duties of the office. To which the Major made the following reply: " you are the only 1st Lieutenant in the regiment who has not applied for the office, and from what I know of you I think you are the better fitted for the position than any of them, and I command you to assume the duties of the office. I will give you all the aid I can in booking yourself up.
