The Cars run from Cairo direct to Chicago Ill, so your letters will reach me the third day after they leave Bloomfield. The fortifications over at Cairo look threatening. Our regiment has just been furnished with the latest and best improved arms. Rifle musket with saber Bayonets. They will shoot with verlocity 1000 yards [or better?], The enemy in these parts, have no such guns. We dare them to meet us. Good bye, God love you Your husband J.B. Weaver Tell Mr. Baker that the Capt is in fine spirits and health. We are encamped in a cornfield. I am writing without a table or stand so you must excuse this letter. I will write soon again.
