Birds Point Mo Sept 30th 1861 [top part of this page missing] nothing of interest transpired at this Post recently. Last night there was a small skirmish at Norfolk 3 miles below here & one about five miles from here on the Cairo & Fulton RR. We soon heard from the former place. We killed one rebel & got one of our men wounded, I mean one federal, our troops not there. I use the word our to mean union troops. Lieut Moore and Capt Brooks will start home tomorrow I think. The Capt is compelled to quit the service on account of ill health, and he is doing right. His first duty is to himself and family. He has gotten the confidence of all. Well my dear darling wife, do you love me this morning with your whole soul, and are you think of and praying for me this morning? O I feel in my very soul that you are & that you just burn for me to return to
