I was surprised when I got that letter from Hewins I thought he was dead. I heard some time ago that he was - Guess I will write to him tonight and let him know that I am still in the land of the living - I have never written to Mrs Burnum - promised to write when I was there last Spring - have put it off so long am ashamed to write now - it is as much as I can do to write to my relations, I havent had a letter from Uncle George since he was at home - will give him a lecturing if he dont write soon. Well I reckon this is the last New Years I will spend in the Service - One fellows time was out yesterday - This letter is very poorly written but I spect you can make out what I intended to write - Much love to all - Write Soon From Your Nephew Jeff
