Waynesburg - Jan. 21st 1865. Dear old Aunt! The new year has come, and sped almost one twelfth its journey since I received your welcome missive, In it you claimed a prompt reply on the ground of like "good works." I heartily agree with you, but am compelled to apologize for tardiness. Such have been the state of affairs, that it was impossible to write sooner. It is now ten O'clock Saturday evening & I ought to be snoozing, to do justice to myself. Doubtless you have been apprised ere this of the fact that we have a little girl "Baby." It is four weeks old to day and is a splendid looking girl. 'Tis Sunday and I dont wether its wrong or not, but I believe I'll risk it. We sat around the fire on Christmas talking over the future greatness of our "Christmas Gift." I would have liked to
