three hundred yards for two or three minutes then about thirty of the guerrillas formed and charged on our fellows Horton ordered them to dismount and shoot as fast as they could. they came on as fast as their horses could run till they got up within 30 yards Some of the 30" Ky broke and run and threw our boys into confusion. they commenced falling back some kept shooting and got the guerillas checked and started back at last. some of the boys let their horses get away and two of them followed the guerrillas. The guerillas formed and started to make another charge but they didnt come far that time. our fellows had got down behind a creek bank and waited there for them. they fired at each other at long range awhile but neither party seemed to like the idea of making another charge. Horton sent back for all the men that could come soon after they I commenced this letter this morning and thought I would get it ready to go off in the mail today, but 7 colored Recruits came in and I had to quit and make out their papers
