July 19, 1942 Tuscon Ariz. Dear Dad & Mom: It's a quiet morning here in the barracks. Every one is lazy and just loafing around. It is hot already and its only nine o'clock by two or three it should really be a scorcher. I don't feel the heat here as bad as I thought I would it is sometimes 130 degrees but the breeze feels cool somehow. I never saw so many little whirlwinds. You see them way off, a column of dust from the ground several hundred feet up in the air, when they pass thru camp and pick up papers & small sticks etc. the carpenters have left it gives you a good idea of how a real cyclone acts. If one happens to hit a tent it just turns them inside out. I'm really glad we got in a barracks. We had a general formation this morning at eight o'clock. Will soon move out of here and get a two night & two day train trip, hope it is as pleasant as my last two have been. I've really enjoyed them. My train riding the past few months has surely gotten me over a lot of territory. I'll send another telegram when I get to wherever we are going. I just came from church, the chapel here is very nice inside, air conditioned and really pretty. Went
