Base Hospital Fourteen National Army U.S.A. Dec 22nd. Dear Mother and father - Just a few lines to you today as I am sending a Martian to you and each of the boys. Yesterday I went with three of the nurses to a chateau near here for tea and we had a most delightful P.M. I think I told you before of the time I went over to see their miniatures. We wrote them a note of thanks for that privilege and evidently made an impression as they asked us yesterday. They have two lovely children a boy of 3 1/2 and a girl of 15 mos. who made friends with me. They call her the "little crumb" in French and she really is a very sweet little crumb. This morning I was sitting in the mess hall cracking nuts when one of the head nurses came along and took me horseback riding. These are the first real horses I have seen in France and belong to the Engineers. It was pouring and we had to change every stitch when we got in but I had a dandy ride and had some of the
