On Wed, we went to Nantes and had a chance to visit an old chateau belonging to Francis II. We were taken into the dungeons and believe me, I was glad to get back in the fresh air - There were many many cells 3 or 4 stories below ground and right next to the moat - not a ray of light or air and there were numerous little places in the walls large enough for a man to stand in and the French guide told us that they were sealed in alive while standing there - there were also pleasant little platforms high in the tower from which the prisoners were pushed off into the river. At the time this dungeon was occupied by a french "Blue beard" who killed 150 children and bathed in their blood for which he afterward was burned at the stake just before the castle. We came here by auto Thurs, a very pleasant trip, but such a blow after La Boule. In the first place we live in French barracks - long- 4 story stone buildings - full of b.bs and cold as the grave.
