Tues. 26. There is now considerable feeling manifested by the people especially by the republicans in regard to the contemplated surrender of fort Sumpter commanded by our gallant Anderson. Making it appear as a defeat of the present administration by the Southern secessionists. Necessity seems to demand this sacrifice of the gen. govermt. It appears like winter again, the ground is covered with snow, it's chilly and cold. Wed. 27. I make it a rule to play about an hour upon the public square in a game of ball which is necessary for my physical well being. Mr. Berger paid me $3 and now he still owes me $2 which he promised to pay next week. I am pretty well. Thurs. 28. The Professor although a good scholar is very reserved in conversation and not as communicative as I desire him to be, he scarcely ever opens a topic for discussion, and the greater portion of our meals is consumed without any talk. I feel in pretty good spirits since I received two letters and one paper to day. I am very well satisfied with the progress of my studies.
