Friday 26. Several of my friends and myself took the cars for Mt Vernon this morning, we met Miss Wright, a teacher on the cars and I had a pleasant chat with her, I also met some other friends from Bertram. Arrived in Mt. Vernon in good time, and found numerous acquaintances. Visited the Adelphian society and made them a speech. It rained pretty hard, staid at the "Central House". Sat. 27. I found Miss Ady and several other young ladies, and had a very social time. The Mt. Vernon folks were very kind to us and I was very much pleased with my visit. Our squad returned in time to Cedar Rapids. I was appointed to take charge of a room with a company of men the best one furnished to the comp. The most of the men must sleep on the floor, while we are provided with cots, I have a set of fine men under my charge. Sun. 28. Went to the Methodist Church, and listened attentively to an excellent sermon preached by Rev W.W. Estabrook, the preachers are getting very patriotic. I also spoke in their class meeting. I did not do much in the afternoon, I read a part of Kit Carson's biography and slept the rest of the time.
