Tues. 9 Ms. Hayden my writing teacher described the partnership existing between him and Mr. James, and removed to Bryant and Stratton's college. Mr. Jones does not like it. Wedne. 10 I started for Belleville early this morning, in order to secure anything of some kind. I arrived there in good season and found many of my old friends. Mr. [Noetting?] seemed happy to see me, and I agreed to become his guest. A great change is perceptible in this progressive little village. Large new edifices grace its mecadamized streets.. Thurs. 11 Mr. [Noetting?] persuaded me to stay a few days with him. I found that every kind of business in my languid as elsewhere nothing but what is immediately connected with the military pays any where now. I enjoyed myself pretty well at the house of my legal friend. Frid. 12 A county fair is now going on at this place and I paid my admission fee, and saw the "show", which was a very poor affair indeed. I do not believe in these county swindling institutions, benefitting a few men only. Sat. 13. I bade farewell to my friends this afternoon and started for St. Louis, where I arrived safe after a pleasant journey. I was glad to get back, yet I feel as though this is not my home.
