Mon. 4 Commenced my school today with 25 pupils who were al anxious to see me. It does me good to look upon their pleasant, familiar countenances once more, it seems as though I have been absent but a few weeks every thing presents the idea of familiarity. Tues. 5 I am afraid that the record of this winter will be just as monotonous as last, but I hope something of interest may turn up often. Wed. 6. Muscatine Co. has done nobly in this campaign it, has sent out 13 companies, it certainly is the banner county of this state. Let the rest imitate this patriotic example. Thrus. 7 Fremont is superceded by Gen. Hunter, his enemies have finally been successful in their designs, a long statement of charges, is published by Adj. Gen. Thomas, which if true proves that he is not the man for the position, but I sincerely hope, that he (Fremont) will disprove them, and be amply rewarded by a just people. Fri. 8 General Scott the old hero, has retired from active service, with the gratitude of the nation, he has been a mighty man in council and in war, he rendered his country important services. May he enjoy his retirement and may it not be embittered by the defeat of the federal arms, Mc Clelland succeeds him.
