Mon. 20. The snow is very deep this morning. Cameron our secretary of war have resigned. Mr. Stanton is his successor, a difference of opinion of with regard to arming the rebels slaves, existed between the sec. & pres. which is supposed caused the separation. Ady's girls and I visited Mr. Pace's where we spent a pleasant evening. Hard walking. Tues. 21. This is a very fine day, but I do not enjoy it, I feel sad and disheartened. I have such gloomy spells frequently, I cannot fully comprehend them, yet I do not like to feel so forsaken, seeking for a sympathetic heart to cheer me on, this it appears is denied me and I feel gloomy. I see nothing but difficulties and toils ahead. Wed. 22. Had a spelling school tonight, it was a pretty good one. Heard that the federal troops gained a glorious victory over a superior force of rebels at Somerset Ky, where the rebel gen. Zollikoffer was killed. Hurrah for the Union. Thurs. 23. Went to the Stone Schoolhouse, this evening, where we had an excellent spelling school. Had a fine sleigh ride. Weather is mild. Fri. 24. We had a good many visitors in our school today, they seemed to be pretty much pleased with our exercises, some of my pupils did very well. I staid with Stewart's family tonight, where I had a very pleasant visit.
