April 1. Tues. 1 It rained a little this morning, but ceased toward 7 o’clock A.M. and we started in a skiff with about a dozen passengers to cross the Iowa river, which is more like a small creek than a river in the summer season, but now is presented the appearance of a good sized lake, we had considerable difficulty in crossing it, which we accomplished however in the course of a few hours. The wind blew very heavily. I walked to Homestead, got on the cars there, and was off for Muscatine. All the land is covered with water to a very great extent. It rained this evening. Arrived at Muscatine this afternoon. I could not find the Messrs Hayes in their office. Mr. Jellison invited me to stay with him which I did and was well received. Wed. 2 I visited several law offices this morning to ascertain what chance I might have to enter one of them, but the prospects are not very flattering. I saw Hayes & Bro. who are anxious to have me stay with them, and are willing to help me along. Thurs. 3 I have agreed to accept the kind offer of Hayes & Bro. and am going to study law with them this summer, they have agreed to use their influence in procuring a notarial seal for me. This is the best I can do now.
