Tues. 8 Made several ineffectual attempts to start for town, but it seemed my fortune, that as soon as I was ready to mount my Rosinanti the rain increased, and I was compelled to retire into the house. Finally about two o’clock P.M. I left Ady’s. Had a very muddy journey, some parts of the road appeared almost bottomless, but I managed to get into town after a three hour ride, wet muddy and fatigued; thankful however for getting here. I put up at Jellison’s. Wed. 9. Commenced the study of Law in earnest. It is my chosen profession, and I hope by divine assistance to occupy a place in the front rank of the bar. I know that I can do more good as a lawyer, than as any other person. I commence the profession with high anticipations of future usefulness, how well I shall succeed time alone will reveal. Thurs. 10 Mr. Jellison agreed to board me for $1.50 pr week, I accepted the offer, and my time of commencement to board with him, will reckon from last Monday. The family is quite pleasant towards me, but the fare is not as good as I would like to have it, well I must be contented, since elsewhere I would probably have to pay at least $2.00 pr week, as my funds are pretty limited I must be as economical as I possibly can be.
