Sun. 18 I attended the M. E. Church this A.M. Rev. Evans, preached and unprofitable sermon to me, but I hope he will improve his style of delivery, that i may receive more benefit from him the next time I go to hear him. Visited Dr. [Goodno's] S.S. and was very much pleased with its workings, especially with the primary department, in charge of Mrs. [Eishelberger] I addressed the young folks, who were wide awake. Mon. 19 Considerable talk is made concerning General [Linter's] proclamation which emancipates all slaves in South Carolina Georgia and Florida. The administration is not in favor of the plan. The law taxing dogs meets with very little favor of the people of Iowa. The weather is cool. I finished the first vol. of Blackstone, which has given me considerable pleasure, there is something grand in the study of law. Tues. 20 This morning Dr. [Goodno] appointed me deputy county [suft. con.] schools. I am making preparations to start on a trip through the country alone, to visit the schools. I am going to start tomorrow. I commenced the study of the 2nd vol. of Blackstone. The weather is decidedly cool for this season. Nothing of importance from the [seat] of war. No prospects yet to have the war closed soon. My God let is cease speedily.
