Mon. 2 I was assigned a part of the exhibition which will come off on next Wednesday evening. I am to represent a [consul?] in a tragedy. Richmond is threatened by an army. Tues. 3 Visited wife Barrows and gave her a German [lefson]. Attended a rehearsal at the Fremont Hall. The weather is very fine. I am not studying as hard as I might, yet I am doing as well under the circumstances as I possibly can do. Wed. 4 Assisted in arranging things for for our exhibition for the benefit of the Soldiers' Aid Society. Some misunderstanding between the society and the local of the Journal, led to a very severe article being published in The Davenport Democrat against the local. Our Exhibition was well attended, the hall was filled. And our effort was a complete success. Thurs. 5 I forgot to state that I have charge of School No 1 during Dr. [Goodno's] absence, yesterday got along very well, the [furfrils] seemed to like me. The citizens are very much pleased with our exhibition. I burnt Mr. Bridgman a little, while discharging a load of powder in a pistol, but he will soon get over it. Fri. 6 The Board of Co. Supervisors refused Dr. [Goodno's] bill for extra services, it is too bad I will not get pay for travelling over the county visiting schools.
