Thurs. 10 The governor of this state has called for five regiments of infantry. I am seriously considering the matter, whether I shall or shall not reenlist again, I almost feel as if it is my duty as an American citizen to go to defend my country. Fri. 11 I attended the Miss Barrow's pic nic, came on the ground near its close, and did not enjoy myself as I desired on account of the [session symphics] that prevailed among the pupils and people. Sat. 12. Again I started out for another picnic at Latterret's grove, where the Misses Shepherd and Rigg's schools met to have a fine time. After diverse accidents we finally reached the party, by whom we were cordially welcomed. I addressed the crowd after partaking of a fine dinner. Every one seemed to enjoy himself in fine style. I drilled the boys to their delight Had a splendid time, returned home satisfied. Sun. 13. I fasted till evening today. Attended the Presbyterian church with Mr. McCampbell who talked of assisting me in raising a company, I feel very much like going to war. I listened to a fine sermon at the Presbyterian church. The weather is very pleasant at present, I feel well.
