Thurs. 31 I am laying a foundation for filling my company. I am getting my friends to work for me. I want to go to war for my country but I do not want to go as a private because I know I cannot endure the fatigue. August Fri. 1. This month brings us sultry days, in which the powerful rays of Sol will make many a person sweat. This is the harvest month, yes many a poor body will have to suffer from the excessive heat in the harvest field. The harvest is not very good this year, perhaps we will have but half a crop of grain. Sat. 2. All the papers are full of puffs concerning my company, but still I have very few recruits as yet, but I am still in good hope. Sun. 3. This is a very warm day. I wrote a notice to the different papers, and did some other work for the purpose of aiding me in recruiting. Mon. 4. This evening I went to Davenport in company with F. Doran, [Ruklemann?], [Mr. & Mrs.?] Barrows & Co. on board the Jennie Whipple, had a very pleasant trip. I intend to open a recruiting office in Davenport, but I am afraid that it will prove a failure, no patriotism there.
