Sun. 24. All kinds of caucuses were held today, Capt. Hill and Henry O’Connor were recommended respectively for Col & Major of our regiment which is to be the 35th I came very near having my company rejected, owing to a want of three men. I have been [consoled?] by the different captains, to hold on and they would see that every thing was made right, they would give me some men, but when it came to the point they would not let me have a single one though I should offer them $50 a piece for them. I went to see Mr. Chs Hill, with whom I attended the German theater. Mon. 25. After settling all my business, I departed with my friends from Davenport to Muscatine where we arrived in good season, my men or a good part of them were at the depot to greet me upon my arrivals. I had to explain many things to them after which they were satisfied. Tues 26 Took my men out to drill, they did very well, and I hope they will learn pretty soon. I am proud of them, they are all fine fellows, the best in the county. Wed. 27 Fighting near the Rappahannoc, Pope’s army defeated by the rebels. Sigel captured 2000 rebels. I spent the evening at Walton’s, had a fine time. Wrote 5 letters to friends.
