1862-09-01 -- 1862-09-05

Mon. 1  flag by the German Ladies of Muscatine at the Fremont Hall.  It is a beautiful flag.  Speeches were made by Mrs. Eicholz and Mrs. Funk, I took the flag and responded in what I think a feeling manner.  After this we paraded through the streets led by a brass band, followed by the Irish Comp. and a good many citizens, we reached camp about 11 A.M. amid the continued cheers of the men in camp.  We drew our rations and got dinner, which the men appreciated very much.
Tues. 2.  Worked hard all day making our quarters appear hospitable in which we succeeded admirably, we have a good house, arranged with four rows of bunks on either side, we have a good kitchen and a better cook.
Wed. 3.  Exercised pretty much in drilling, this had an excellent effect on my sleep at night.  My men are in good health, to which their appetites testify.
Thurs. 4.  My men got some beer today, it was ordered by my 2d Lt. it created considerable confusion.  I reprimanded him for it, he did not like it at all.  I went to town this evening.  Saw a certain so called magician perform at Fremont Hall, by the name of [Hamburjes?], (or [Humbugger?] rather) he is a perfect nuisance.  Got met in returning to camp.
Fri. 5.  Did not feel very well all day, had Mrs. Dillman and others for dinner, the weather is disagreeable.  Some of my men are not very well.
