June 1, 1944 Thursday night Dear Dave, Sorry I haven't written before, but basic training keeps you pretty busy. Especially when you're an acting corporal. I have to teach classes, give drill, pull C.Q., Corporal of the Guard (that's what I'm doing now), and a million other things. It's tough at times, but I like it. First of all I want to thank you for sending me the Scuttlebutt. It's really swell to find out how other fellows in the service are getting along and where they are. We fired the .30 cal machine gun yesterday. It was really fun as well as learning something. After my squad had finished firing, I got about a 100 extra rounds and really played havoc with the target. Only five more weeks to go after this one. I have twelve of them
