July 2, 1944 Italy Dear 'Scuttlebutt', Thanks a lot, Bruce, for the fine paper. You can be certain it is an invaluable aid to my memories of the home town. You know, by the time this reaches you, I will have have passed the 2 1/2 year mark for service. Yes it's quite a long time, the longest of any Washington boy except Ralph Witthoft. By the ay, I'm pretty close to Ralph, John Jackson, and the old outfit now. Their dance band "The Rhythm Majors" play for me only day before yesterday. Those boys are doing a terrific job of entertaining the fellows. They've had their 'tough going' days though, and plenty of them. The days in Anzio were plenty hot and they came and [if?] it, luckily
