Friday, July 14 [1944] Dear Dave, I have received quite a few of your letters lately and your note included in one of them. Thanks for writing. I won't even pretend that this will be a very long letter or maybe it won't even be a very good one but I think you deserve a letter so I'll send it anyway. We are still seeing a little action now and then but it is merely a mopping up campaign anymore. I really shouldn't say we because I haven't seen any sign of action since 260. The Japs are still fighting over here but they are [illegible] it when and where we want it done. They have lost the offensive and are really on the defensive, now. I imagine they are beginning to get worried after these air blows we have been
