Jackson Miss July 21/ 63? Well folks, We are as well as common and we hope you are the same we have been just tolerable well for awhile back I had a little rip of the Billious fever but have got shet of that and am ready for something else. I was sick when Peter wrote you the last letter or I would have wrote some too but I can't write when I am sick it is no use for me to try. Well I suppose you have hered all about the fall of Vicksburg the Siege of Jackson and the vacuating there of but there is something you havnt herd of and that is the fall of Brandon. Great and terrible was the fall there of the like was never known before it is a little town east of Jackson 12 miles we started Mr. Johnson from Jackson and he got lazy out at brandon and didn't want go any farther and Col Geddes took a brigade of Infantry and four pieces of artillery and we went out and gave them a fresh start when we got in about 3 miles of Brandon we could see them across an open field about a mile off we opened on them with our artillery and they replyed with theirs they poped away about half an hour doing each other no damage when Col Geddes come up and told the old 8th to go and feal of them. So we started supported by the 114 Ill, we had to go across an open field for about 2/3 of a mile and then we had some hills to climb which we was glad of as we was going to across the field the rebs first pored the grape and canister at us but they only killed one man out of the Regt when we got in about a quarter of
