Memphis Tenn Aug 18th 1864 Dear Mother I received your letter but would rather have a longer letter but I shall not grumble this time hoping that the next may do better. I am well and getting So fat that it is a [Missen?] for Me to live I got up the other night and tried to kill myself I thought I had about lived My time out and So I thought I would try the other world I like to broke my leg Mashed one of my toes done it all in my sleep I have not
