maybe before but I think we will stay here until civil law is restored and I don't think that will be before Sept. or Oct. We herd that the 2nd (?) 4th 17th and 15th Iowa Regts was at home. I want you to let us know if they are for we never see a Northern newspaper here. I like this part of the South first rate and would like to live down here if I could get a colony from the North to settle here but I don't care about associating with these half breeds that are here for nearly half the citizens are mixed with nigger. I have saw hundreds of slaves in this city that are just as white as any people I ever saw and then these ornery (illegible) had the impudence to preach northern amalgamationism if ever one says so to me I will smack him in the eye but the citizens and reb soldiers treat us with the greatest respect
