Saving...
October 11, 1944 Dear Mother, I had your letter thirty five yesterday, but not much in the mail line for about a week. I hope the Waucoma trip was pleasant. We've been having grey, rainy days so that the early darkness is emphasized. No bicycling since before I went to Scotland. Grace's brother is leaving for a better job, I understand. I don't know how they will get along without him, as he seemed to hold things together. Well time will tell, I guess. Maureen sent me some lovely gloving [note between lines: for sewing leather gloves] needles from Glasgow, so I must write her today. I had Jay send off a box to her yesterday -- some of my ration candy, matches, juice and a can of Vienna sausages. Also some hot chocolate. I washed my red sweater today and I look like rosy-fingered dawn, because I put it through a red dye dip. I can't tell yet whether it did any more than replace what came out. I'll try stronger dye next time. Today is my day off. I slept till noon, ate, washed clothes, fed a cat (now asleep on my grey sweater) and now hope to write a bit.
