March 21, 1945 Dear Mother, I had a very pleasant birthday, which we celebrated today instead of yesterday due to a slight confusion as to Spring and me on the part of my friends. When I came home from work this afternoon I found a lovely big plant, a blue-violet cineraria on my table with a note from Shirlea, Lin and the new girl, Helen Boillot. Then tonight Polly took me to town to see the play Peter Pan, which we enjoyed a lot. It's better "escape" than ever. Afterwards we caught a bus home and she and Shirlea came in for a snack. We had Polly's Nescafe, my rusk and Shirlea's anchovies. Um! I missed the angel food but will eat two extra when I get home -- hot ones, too! The weather has been exquisite the last few days and the tender green of the leaves and the cloudy pink of the almond trees are so pretty it hurts. I do hope it stays nice for the weekend. Polly and I are going to Whitehall Saturday afternoon early. Then Johnnie is coming later if she can. Jay will come as soon as she can make it. Bobby and John will already be there from London, I suppose. Poor Mrs. B.! Polly has to go to a meeting of PTs Sunday afternoon and will probably have
