Sharpsburg Sept, 21th 1862 Dear folks I now will try and give you a acount of what we have done and what we are doeing We had a great battle here on the 17th. I arrived here on the 15th in the morning. I had only just got here when the rebes began to shell us from the hieghts around Sharpburg We had a battalion of the 1st NY Arty 10 pounders that answered them in a fine stile to dismounting some of their guns and makeing their men run away We could see their officers trying to raly them but they could not The canonadeing was kept up more or less all day the 16. Last night the rebs fell back on our right in a better position as soon as it was dark most all of our army was thrown across a creek
