Sharpsburg was the rebs headquarters on the 17. it is a place of about 1200 inhabitants. There was hardly a hous or barn but what had 5, or 6, shell holes through them. The church where Lee had his quarters was cut all to peaces most. When we got to the Potomac we had to ford the river, we have layed here now a little over a week. We can look all over the cuntry from where we are camped on our right at the foot of the Heights is the village of Bolivor, off to the left is Harppyrs Fery noted for the famous John Brown raid and the cowardly surrender of Col Miles across from Happyrs are the Mayrlands Heights across the Shannadoah from Harppyrs are the Loudon Heights. All of these places we hold now these places Col miles held, and gave up without a strugel hardly. The rebels are about 4, miles off, probly at Winchester. The report is thet they are fortifying Winchester. I must bring this to a close for I have got this sheet most full. We have not been payed off yet but expect to soon. We have pretty good times here now have all the hard tacks we can lay. We talk some of bridgeing the Potomac with hard tack. I reconed they will last about as long as any matireal. I have writen all I can think of at present I hope I shall here from you soon. I would like to here from Lon. They have been giving the rebs fun in the west.
